The Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) is pleased to announce their newest addition to the leadership team, Charleston native Courtney Clark. Courtney joins the team as the branch manager of the Sangaree

Courtney Clark, new branch manager of the Sangaree Library

Library, a branch well known for their inspired community projects such as the community garden and the Little Free Library(R) and their unique programs such as the after school teen hangout titled Badges and Bookbags.

Courtney attended the Charleston County School of the Arts as a vocal major. Then she graduated from the College of Charleston with degrees in psychology and sociology. After briefly moving to Virginia to attain a M.Ed. in school psychology from the College of William and Mary, Courtney returned to Charleston to attain her Masters in Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina. Her favorite part of library school was studying abroad in London, where she got to visit libraries across England and Scotland. While attending school, she worked at both the College of Charleston and the College of William and Mary in administrative roles.
Courtney was the Circulation Librarian at the Charleston Library Society, and is happily joining the Berkeley County Library System to reach more people in South Carolina. After spending much of her youth in Summerville, she is excited to become a part of the community at the Sangaree branch.
Courtney is an avid reader who is currently enjoying historical fiction and young adult titles. She also likes to learn new crafts, and knits and does paper crafts in her free time. She also dabbles in crochet, but is still learning! Some of Courtney‘s favorite things to do at home include watching TV and movies, playing video games, and learning about events in the Charleston area via social media. She newly took up running, so you might find her around town participating in 5K and 10K races; she is already registered for next year’s Cooper River Bridge Run!
BCLS is excited to have Courtney join the team and looks forward to seeing her grow and enhance the library and its community connection.

Berkeley County Library System Launches New Young Learner’s Toolbox Program

Berkeley County, SC – The Berkeley County Library System is pleased to introduce its newest resource, The Young Learner’s Toolbox. With aid from the South Carolina State Library, this new program will provide resources and encourage out-of-school learning for families and young children ages 3-8 who face learning, language, or communication barriers.

After receiving a Large Competitive Grant from the South Carolina State Library, the Berkeley County Library System brings the Young Learner’s Toolbox (YLT) program to the Moncks Corner Library. This new iStock_000071177681_Largeresource will offer assistance to families and children with learning, language, or communication barriers through a series of lectures for parents and care givers, a new Learning Lab at the Moncks Corner Library, and learning tools and kits available to check out for at-home learning.

Assisting young children with Autism, Asperger’s Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Dyslexia, and children who speak English as Second Language is a tremendous need in the Berkeley County area. The YLT will provide a higher understanding of the resources available within the community and will encourage families and children with learning or communication barriers to engage in play and learning opportunities in a fun environment without the structure of a classroom or at home without the constraint of limited financial resources.

A section of the Moncks Corner Library has been transformed into a new Learning Lab for the YLT program featuring multi-sensory toys, learning kits, and technology encouraging children to learn while they play. The YLT program will provide guided play sessions in the Learning Lab on a reoccurring basis to engage children and families to socialize and begin building a support group. Library staff members will provide a hands-on tour of the Lab giving parents and professionals an opportunity to “try-before-you-buy” and to discover new resources to help children with certain learning barriers. Private guided play sessions may also be reserved online at the library’s website.

The Learning Lab will also feature a resource center for families to learn more about resources and services for children both locally and nationally including online training, service professionals, and purchasing guides.

The YLT will feature a lecture series for parents and care givers, which will kick off this April in honor of Autism Awareness Month with speakers from local organizations, Berkeley County First Steps and BabyNet, who offer resources and services to families and children with special needs.

South Carolina State Library to host webinar offering self-publishing tips

SELF-e and Indie SC programs, author catalogs featured in event
COLUMBIA, MARCH 17
Librarians looking to offer support to local authors or story tellers looking to build their reputations should attend the South Carolina State Library’s SELF-e and Indie SC webinar on March 23.
The free webinar, hosted by SCSL Director of Communications Curtis Rogers and BiblioLabs Content Project Operations Manager Allie McKinney, will discuss how the SELF-e and Indie SC programs can help independent authors break out of obscurity.
Webinar attendees will receive an overview of the SCSL’s new web page for self-publishing, and view Indie SC’s new catalog for self-published books. Rogers and McKinney will also field questions about self-publishing in the South Carolina region.
Several published authors already using the SELF-e program encouraged writers to explore and utilize the digital publishing platforms available through the SCSL.
Summerville-based science fiction author Tony Bertauski said SELF-e helped him find opportunities for promoting his work that he had previously missed.
“Not only did it inform me of local book fairs I could attend, but also gave me a way to easily network with fellow indie writers,” Bertauski said. “That kind of exposure is absolutely needed to succeed in this career track, and SELF-e really helped me with that.”
Walterboro-based author and librarian Shiela Martina also recommended learning more about SELF-e and Indie SC.
“Anyone self-publishing will tell you than exposure is the main challenge,” Martina said. “Programs like SELF-e can really get your name out to the world.”

More information about Bertauski and Martina can be found at on their websites.

South Carolina State Library releases 2015 Notable State Documents list

Historical brochures, flood response measures featured among selections
COLUMBIA, MARCH 16
Maps detailing barbecue restaurants, executive orders directing natural disaster recovery efforts, and a periodical researching African-American history were among the 18 publications that made the cut for the latest South Carolina State Library’s Notable State Documents list.
The annual award is meant to call attention to the most informative documents released by state agencies in 2015.  Awards will be presented to the winning agencies and authors on March 31 at 10:00 a.m. at the South Carolina State Library in Columbia.
A panel of librarians and state employees selected the documents for inclusion on the list, grading the publications based on their designs, writing styles, and breadth of information. The judges chose a diverse group of documents for recognition, including a brochure detailing a historical battle and two well-designed websites.
SCSL Library Acting Director Leesa Aiken said the yearly award showcases some of the strongest work completed by state agencies.
“South Carolina state documents provide a wealth of information, statistics, and share a broad range of knowledge about our state,” Aiken said. “I am pleased that we are able to publicly recognize these important publications and websites as notable documents and it is my hope that all South Carolina state agencies continue to produce high quality documents such as these.”
