September is Library Card Month

Columbia, S.C. – September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the South Carolina State Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that our students have the most important school supply of all – a free library card.
Resources at your local South Carolina public library are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs, and services that support academic achievement.
Students can use their library cards from home as well. South Carolina public libraries provide access to important educational resources such as ebooks, Discus – South Carolina’s Virtual Library, StudySC – K-12 South Carolina Information, and much more!
“Our state’s public libraries provide all types of students with the tools they need to succeed,” says Dr. Curtis Rogers, Communications Director for the South Carolina State Library. “Public libraries throughout the state offer students exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun and resources they can access from the library or from home – all with a free library card. A public library card is the most important school supply of all.”
This month at the BCLS Goose Creek branch, all adults who sign up to get a new library card will be entered to win a Reading Lovers’ Basket.

Donna also worked a short time at the Jamestown Branch of the Public Library in 1989. Donna’s resume also includes working at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a sheetmetal mechanic for around 13 years, two of those were spent managing their Transition Library. The Transition Library was focused on providing information and services to help workers gain new employment when the Shipyard closed. In her spare time, she writes a column for the Berkeley Independent entitled “Jamestown Loop.” Donna’s ties to the community and extensive work experience in the library industry provides for a perfect fit for the upcoming opening of the newly expanded St. Stephen Library.

Sangaree Library is proud to present the completion of its community garden project as a result of volunteers from the community on June 6, 2015.
The original plan was to assemble, fill and plant three raised beds with the help of community participants on Saturday, June 6, 2015. The library was amazed at the amount of support it received on that Saturday. In fact, so much so that volunteers pooled together additional resources to expand the project to 4 raised beds! There are now 2 raised vegetable beds, 1 raised pollinator bed, and 1 raised vegetable and pollinator bed. The produce from the garden will be donated to local residents in need.
