[4/13/17] St. Stephen, SC – The Center for Heirs Property will present a two hour seminar at the St. Stephen Library to educate the community about land ownership and sustainability.  

Here in the Lowcountry, there are stories about every acre of land. Multiple generations grow up knowing that they can have pride in maintaining and preserving the family property. But what if one day, they find out that their property was never officially deeded or probated in court? They could find their land gone through a sale that they couldn’t prevent.

This situation, sometimes knows as Heirs’ Property, is when multiple heirs own a piece of land because the ownership was never legally settled. Many victims are descendants of African American families who gave an oral will or an unofficial deed that was never legally verified. And this situation, unfortunately, is all too common. What can you do to prevent it from happening to you?

At the Berkeley County Library System, we care about our community. We want to educate you on how you can preserve your land for the next generation. That’s why St. Stephen Library is partnering with the Center for Heirs Property Preservation to bring a workshop that will give you some basic knowledge on the topic. Join library and Center staff at the St. Stephen Library on Thursday, May 25th, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm for the Center for Heirs Property Seminar.

The Center is an expert at assisting Lowcountry residents with land preservation and legal matters. Since 2005, the non-profit has given approximately seventeen-hundred families legal advice and counsel in situations like these. And the impact is widespread. The Center serves 6 counties from Beaufort to Georgetown.

Another service of the Center is forestry. According to their website, “the Center’s Land Utilization program is currently providing these families with sustainable forestry education, technical assistance and resources to realize more income from their family land.”
