Recorder Class 

Exercise your brain! For beginning or “rusty” adults and teens who want to learn to play in a group setting.  Prior recorder or other musical experience not required.  Reading music is also not a prerequisite.  You should be able to play several pieces within a few weeks.

Tai Chi

An ancient form of exercise for all ages using slow, smooth body movements. Tai Chi is particularly effective in healing, strengthening the cardiovascular and immune systems, and disease prevention. It can sharpen reflexes as well as boost energy and one’s overall sense of well-being.

Recipe Exchange: A St. Stephen Community Cookbook

Calling all local cooks! During the month of January, bring your favorite family recipes to the library, so we can include them in our very first St. Stephen Community Cookbook! Once we have enough recipes, we’ll create a cookbook that you’ll be able to check out at the library or make copies from.

DI Cookbook Club

Do you have a special meal from your family background that your family loves? Would you like to learn some new recipes and introduce your family to new tastes and traditions? We will discover delicious family friendly meals from around the world such as Greece, Japan, Lebanon, Peru, and Poland.  Each recipe should be easy to prepare, child friendly and consist of ingredients found in the grocery store.

Lecture Series: What in the World?

Dr. Lester Pittman will lead a weekly discussion group on world history and current events based on the book and BBC video series, Civilization: The West and the Rest by historian Niall Ferguson. Discussions will compare the modern history of Europe, China, the Middle East, Japan, Africa, the United States, and Latin America as well as the roots of modernization and the impact of globalization. Are western civilization and the United States exceptional or can other regions and countries successfully modernize as well? How will globalization and the rise of the rest of the world affect Americans?

Lecture Series: Explore the Civil War & Black History

Join us and our local guest speakers for a fascinating lecture series spotlighting several different aspects of slavery from the American Revolution to the Civil War. Explore key facts and people who played a role in ending slavery. Plus we will take a deep look into the Underground Railroad and the African American Quest for Freedom.

Poetry Reading with Marcus Amaker

Join us for a poetry reading lead by Marcus Amaker, Charleston’s first poet laureate, of his own works. He is the author of seven books of poetry and has contributed poems to a variety of volumes.  In addition to poetry, Amaker is an award-winning graphic designer, web designer, videographer and musician.

Master Gardener Q & A

Need some gardening or yard advice? Trained and Certified Clemson Extension Tri-County Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand answer questions about lawns, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, vegetables, and all aspects of gardening in the Lowcountry.  They will also accept soil samples and provide handouts and reference materials, as needed.

Sip and Paint After Hours

Couples 17 years and older, come and enjoy a free fun-filled night  after hours in the library. Watch a movie or paint under the direction of an art teacher. Finger foods and drinks will be served. Child care will be provided.

Gullah Art and Stories

Join local artist Bernadette Cali for a digital viewing of her artwork and storytelling about the Gullah people of Wadmalaw Island in celebration of Black History month. Her works of art and stories tell of a culture long undisturbed, but will soon vanish in the midst of progress. You may also enjoy some tasty Gullah treats.
